TWO CENTURIES OF HOSPITALITY
JPRestaurants are delighted to announce the opening of our latest Jersey Crab Shack restaurant which is located at 4-6 Market Street next to the Central Market. The restaurant, to be known as Jersey Crab Shack St Helier is located in two historic buildings that have housed taverns and eating houses since the 1820s where they were ideally situated to serve refreshments to customers and traders of the adjacent Central Market, a traditional Jersey meeting place that is still a hive of activity and beautiful food stalls 200 years later.
Over two centuries the buildings have housed the Kent Coffee House, the Commercial Hotel, the Market Tavern, the Clarendon Hotel and more recently Lido’s, named after the previous owners grandmother who managed to keep the bar open during the German Occupation of the 1940s. Our plan is for Jersey Crab Shack St Helier to carry on the long tradition of family-owned businesses that have provided good food and drink and a warm welcome to Islanders and visitors for 200 years. We will however only be operating as a restaurant serving food to call customers and not as a bar.
The look and feel is of the new restaurant is very 21st century but it is enhanced with design detail taken from our past Island traditions, as well as the original Jersey Crab Shack in St Brelade, which we also plan to renovate this winter to reflect the updated style of our new St Helier restaurant.
The bar is made of brass and has hammer-embossed patterns evocative of the bachîn, or brass cooking pots, traditionally used to make black butter. The bachîn also features on our logo and elements of it are included in our new crockery made by Jersey Pottery and on our team uniforms. And the teal green leather of the beautiful banquette seating is inspired by our resident Jersey Green Lizard.
While our look and feel is being updated, our menu will be staying the same and will continue to be adapted seasonally with new dishes, such Linguine Vongole and old favourites, such as Crab Tacos, our Chicken Schnitzel, Punjabi Lentil Curry and Fish and Chips, as we’ve always done. And the same happy team will be on hand to provide the best service we always strive to provide our customers.
As the same time as the opening of Jersey Crab Shack St Helier, we are launching an updated website and new look and feel for Jersey Crab Shack. The website is jerseycrabshack.com where bookings for the new restaurant can also be from September 6th, 2018.
We look forward to welcoming islanders back to this traditional venue so they can keep making Jersey history for years to come.
