Rockpooling in Jersey:A Handy Guide

A group of women look in a coastal rock pool

There’s a whole little world hiding between Jersey’s rocks!

When the tide goes out, rockpools appear along the coastline, revealing tiny crabs, anemones, prawns, starfish and all sorts of other marine life.

For families, rockpooling is a brilliant way to explore Jersey’s coastline and keep little explorers entertained.

What might you find?

Look carefully and you could spot:

  • Tiny crabs hiding beneath rocks
  • Sea anemones tucked into pools
  • Small fish darting through the water
  • Limpets clinging to rocks
  • Shrimps and prawns
  • Starfish
  • Periwinkles and other small sea creatures

What should you take?

You don't need much. A bucket or small net can be useful, along with wellies or sturdy shoes, sun cream and plenty of enthusiasm.

A magnifying glass can also be fun for getting a closer look at tiny creatures.

But remember, these are living animals in their natural home, so the best approach is look, don't take.

Rockpooling responsibly

Turn rocks over carefully and put them back exactly where you found them. Avoid picking up animals unless you really need to, and never take creatures home.

Keep an eye on children around the water and always check the tide times before heading out.

The sea can come back in faster than you expect.

Make a day of it

St Brelade’s Bay is a great place to combine a morning of exploring with a proper lunch.

After you've discovered what’s hiding in the pools, dry off, wash your hands and head to Jersey Crab Shack for some seafood of your own!
